These tips will help your freshly cut flowers last longer:
- Morning is the best time to cut flowers, avoiding the hottest part of the day.
- Fresh cut flowers need time to take up water. Your flowers will appreciate sitting in water for the drive home. Feel free to bring some buckets in your car, and we can supply the water.
- Let your freshly cut flowers sit and drink up water in a cool place for a couple of hours before you begin to arrange them.
- Remove leaves from the parts of the stems that will be below water. To help your flowers continue to take up water, re-cut the ends of the stems when you arrange them and every couple of days after that.
- Use clean water and a clean vase. Cut flowers can be very thirsty, so check daily to see if they need more water. Rinse the vase and refill with clean water every few days.
- Remove individual flowers as they fade, and make a new arrangement with the longer lasting varieties.
It’s easy to make cut flower food using household ingredients. Here are two recipes:
- 1 quart water
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice or vinegar
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- ½ teaspoon bleach
or
- 2 cups non-diet lemon-lime soda (such as Sprite or 7-Up)
- ½ teaspoon bleach
- 2 cups water
