Horticulture Assistant
Reports to: Horticulture Manager
Hours: full-time, non-exempt, seasonal
Function: Assists with all horticultural garden operations.

Responsibilities:

Garden Areas

  • Helps to plant and maintain all ornamental garden spaces and container plantings.
  • Prepares soil, applies nutrients, scouts for pests, edges, plants, weeds, stakes, prunes, deadheads, waters, cleans, and otherwise cares for all garden and container plantings.
  • Keeps all garden areas clean and tidy.

Cut Flowers

  • Cultivates cut flowers, including soil preparation, applying nutrients, scounting for pests, planting, weeding, irrigation, deadheading, staking, and cleanup.
  • Assists in floral design services for event customers, including harvest, preparation, and arranging.
  • Cuts flowers and assembles bouquets for sale at farm stand
  • Provides helpful, prompt, polite service to flower customers.

Integrated Pest Management

  • Participates in pest management for all flower crops, with an emphasis on reducing pesticide use in favor of alternative strategies, where practical and achievable.
  • Participates in annual Worker Protection Standard training for all agricultural workers.

Farmstand

  • Serves as a representative of Quonquont to farm customers.
  • Helps in the farmstand, as needed.

Equipment

  •  Safely operates and maintains equipment (including lawn mower, string trimmer, edger, and flame weeder) in coordination with the farm manager.

Buildings

  • Keeps all farm buildings neat and orderly, inside and out.
  • Notifies managers or owners of necessary repairs.

Farm and Events

  • Assists with farm work, including mowing, invasive plant management, harvesting, and field or orchard sanitation.

Events

  • Assists with public workshops related to horticultural practices and cut flowers.
  • Assists with logistical support for non-flower events, including moving furniture and decorations, cleaning, lawn care, or any other duties that help make events run smoothly.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Assures the safety of the Quonquont workplace and monitors safety for staff and customers.
  • Complies with Quonquont personnel policies.
  • Represents Quonquont Farm in a professional and courteous manner at alltimes.
  • Provides quality service to all customers and visitors.
  • Attends and participates in appropriate meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

Experience:

  • At least one season’s experience in horticulture (landscape/garden maintenance) or agriculture (greenhouse and/or field crop production).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ornamental plants and their cultivation and care, including identification of pests and diseases.

Skills and Traits:

  • The Horticulture Assistant must agree with and be committed to the mission, values, and policies of Quonquont Farm.
  • Must be energetic, team-oriented, and attentive to detail.
  • Must be able to perform long hours of repetitive work effectively andefficiently.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid Massachusetts driver’s license.

Mental, Physical, and Communication Demands:

  • Must be available to work when and where needed by the business. Must be willing to work irregular hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Requires reliable, timely attendance.
  • Must be self-motivated.
  • Requires basic math and computer proficiency.
  • Requires interacting with people in a pleasant, courteous, and professional manner.
  • Requires sitting in vehicles, standing, bending, or kneeling for up to four hours without break.
  • Requires ability to work safely around heavy, often dangerous, equipment.
  • While performing this job, the employee will regularly be required to use hands and arms to reach and grasp to hold products, supplies, and tools; to talk and speak clearly to customers and co-workers; and to hear questions and machinery.
  • Requires working long hours outdoors in all weather, including heat, cold, sun, and rain.
  • This job requires a great deal of standing, walking, kneeling, bending, crouching, and general mobility throughout the day. It includes the ability to lift, carry, and push items weighing up to 40 pounds regularly throughout the workday.
  • This job requires working with machinery that generates loud noise and strong odors.
  • This job requires working safely in the presence of pesticides of varying degrees of toxicity.
  • Allergic conditions, which could be aggravated when handling or working indoors or outdoors with plants or chemicals, may be a disqualification.
